Emergency Pediatric Dentist in Santa Monica

We recognize that dental emergencies can be unsettling for both patients and parents. For that reason, our doctors are available during business hours and after hours to ensure you get your questions answered and any treatment needs addressed.

Child Eating AppleMany times, these problems can be discussed over the phone, and the doctor can give you advice to get your child comfortable. If the emergency prompts immediate attention, we will make the necessary arrangements to see your child as soon as possible.

Common Dental Emergencies in Children

If your child has an emergency that requires urgent medical attention, seek medical care first. Once stabilized, we will be available to address any dental needs.

Tooth Knocked Out (Avulsion)

Knocking out a permanent tooth is a true emergency, and the patient should be treated as soon as possible.

Oftentimes, a knocked-out permanent tooth can be re-implanted and stabilized. If you can, place the (relatively clean) tooth back into the socket and hold it in place with a piece of gauze.

If this is not possible, store the tooth in milk (preferably not water) while you call your dentist. It is critical to not leave the tooth out to dry. Contact our office and we will make arrangements to see your child as soon as possible.

When a baby tooth is knocked out, we generally do not recommend re-implanting it, as it can potentially damage the developing permanent tooth.

Tooth Knocked and Out of Place (Displacement)

If a permanent tooth is injured and displaced from its normal position, the tooth can often be repositioned and stabilized by the dentist with early treatment. Contact our office and we will make arrangements to see your child as soon as possible.

Broken Tooth (Fracture)

Hits to the mouth from falling or sports activities can fracture a tooth. If your child’s permanent tooth breaks, try to find the broken piece. Place it in a container of water for safekeeping. We may be able to reattach the broken piece.

Call our office to discuss the situation with one of our doctors. The severity of the break will determine whether this needs to be treated immediately or it can wait until the following morning.

Injuries to Baby Teeth

Young children are known to be adventurous, which can make them prone to falls and injuries. Injuries to baby teeth are not as urgent as those to permanent teeth, but we are available to answer any questions or concerns and to see your child if needed.

Oftentimes, injuries to baby teeth require little to no intervention. However, if your child is in discomfort or you have concerns, please do not hesitate to call our office.

Child in GrassHead/Facial Injuries

If your child suffers a serious injury that involves the head or other facial structures extending beyond the mouth, this is considered a medical emergency.

Depending on the severity of the injury, you should call your child’s pediatrician, take your child to the emergency room, or call 911 for help.

Once stabilized, we will be available to address any dental needs.

Toothache, Gum Swelling, or Abscess

Large cavities or unhealthy nerves can cause infection. The child may or may not feel pain, and prompt dental care can help determine the appropriate treatment.

If your child is in significant pain or the swelling extends into the face (for example, if your child’s cheek is swollen), pain-killing medications (like Tylenol or ibuprofen) or antibiotics may be indicated.

Frequently Asked Questions

You're Not Alone

You might be surprised to learn that many of our patients express concerns about dental anxiety. Sometimes, anxiety has kept them from getting the dental care they need to stay healthy. This can lead to dental emergencies and serious conditions that may require tooth loss. Not to mention, without regular care, your smile can age prematurely and become uncomfortable.woman fearful of dentist | Sedation dentistry santa monica

We want to make dentistry easy for all of our patients – especially our fearful ones. We offer sedation dentistry to ease your fears and make your appointment both comfortable and stress-free.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation in Santa Monica

Nitrous oxide is a great option for patients who need a little assistance taking the edge off. It is a mild form of sedation that we administer through a small nose mask while you are having treatment. It enters and leaves your system quickly, so this is a great option for patients who do not want to take the rest of the day to recover or arrange a ride home.

Oral Sedation Dentistry

Anxiety can make it harder for patients to become fully numb, making dentistry a stressful experience and perpetuating the cycle of dental anxiety. Not only does oral sedation relax you, but it makes it easier for you to become fully numb. Sedation can even subdue a strong gag reflex.
